Earth Hour 2015: Use YOUR power to change climate change

Martin Schulz, President of the European ParliamentMaroš Šefčovič, Vice President of the European Commission in charge of Energy Union, Miguel Arias Cañete, the EU climate and energy Commissioner, Karmenu Vella, the EU Environment Commissioner, Neven Mimica, the EU International cooperation and Development as well as 111 Members of the European Parliament, will be joining millions of people around the world this week to renew the charge to change climate change on the occasion of Earth Hour 2015.

EU ETS: The Climate Boxing Ring

On 24th February the Environment Committee of the European Parliament votes on the Market Stability Reserve, which aims to address the problem of a gigantic surplus of pollution permits in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS). CAN Europe, Carbon Market Watch and WWF hosted a Climate Boxing Ring in front of the European Parliament and invited MEPs to knock out the Toxic Tonnes of the EU ETS.

Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing - Stories from Belize and Fiji

After having showed improvements in their fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, the European Commission lifted the trade sanctions imposed to Belize on October 2014. Fiji was also delisted from the warning list, together with Panama, Togo and Vanuatu.

Representatives of Belize, Fiji and the Pacific Community explain in this video why the EU measures have been beneficial to strengthen the fight against illegal fishing in their waters. The interviews were recorded in the ACP Secretariat in Brussels on 27 October 2014.

Euro-Toques chef cooks LiveWell plate at the European Parliament

From October until December 2014 LiveWell for LIFE and Euro-Toques, the EU's chef's association, will be in the restaurants of the European Parliament for a series of cooking demonstrations on healthy and sustainable diets. The first event took place on 1st October, and the next will be on 18 November and 2nd December.

Cities walk the talk

At a crucial time for European climate policy, 200 European cities and regions are backing a call for action supporting more ambitious and binding climate and energy targets, ensuring that future generations are safeguarded against the worst effects of climate change. Spearheaded by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and WWF, the call is timely and directed towards the European Union, which is engaged in discussions regarding the EU 2030 Climate and Energy Package. WWF and TRAFFIC strongly support the spirit of this initiative, led by MEP Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy, and call on all the Members of the European Parliament to ensure the EU adopts a strong resolution against illicit wildlife trafficking.

At the end of the conference, Mr Edward McMillan-Scott, Member of the European Parliament, addressed WWF commenting on the EU spending on food production, which is not always "on the right direction".

Women of light

WWF and the Indian NGO Barefoot College have started working with women from the poorest communities in rural Africa to train them to become solar engineers and develop clean sustainable energy systems that improve livelihood, security and education for their communities while protecting the pristine environment in which they live.
