10th MAY IS EU OVERSHOOT DAY

If everybody in the world lived like the average EU resident, we would have used up nature’s budget for the year by the 10 May, and would need 2.8 planets.

This is unsustainable - we’re depleting natural ecosystems at a faster rate than what can be renewed. The solutions to reduce the EU’s Ecological Footprint are at hand – but there is only a narrow window for the EU to act.

WHAT IS WWF DOING?

WWF is urging election candidates and future EU leaders to put people’s wellbeing in a thriving environment at the centre of their thinking as they shape the future of the EU and its population.


In its election manifesto, WWF - with more than 3.2 million supporters in Europe –calls for a European Sustainability Pact for a safer, more competitive and responsible EU.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • 751 Members of the European Parliament will be elected between 23-26 May 2019. Based on the outcomes of the elections, 28 new European Commissioners and a new European Council President will be appointed. Together they will set new political priorities.

  • Around 80% of domestic environmental law, covering issues such as climate change, water pollution and loss of nature originates from EU legislation.

  • Fully implementing the Paris Agreement could create 2 million new jobs in Europe, deliver 200 billion euros in health benefits and save 2-3 trillion euros in fossil fuel imports.
