WWF EU Annual Report 2024:
Challenges, Lessons, and Progress

Posted on February, 13 2025

WWF EU is committed to transparency and accountability in all our activities, and as every year, our Annual Report for 2024 provides an overview of our work, impact, and budget.
Throughout the year we worked to ensure transparent EU governance, defend civil society participation, advocate for green investment, and secure the continuation of the European Green Deal that tackles climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Reflecting on the year, some standout moments we proudly recall include:

  • The launch of our flagship publication, the Living Planet Report, revealing a catastrophic 73% decline in the average size of monitored wildlife populations in just 50 years (1970- 2020).

  • Consistently providing expert input to policymakers across all EU institutions, highlighted by our reports like the  “Fair Way Forward” which explores how the transition to a low-carbon economy translates into changes that involve citizens collectively and individually, and “Can Your Money Do Better?”, which exposes how up to €48 billion of EU subsidies annually support activities harming nature, contradicting the EU’s sustainability commitments.

  • Convening of stakeholders through events such as “Turbines and Tides: Expanding EU Offshore Wind in a Nature-Friendly Way” which gathered 100+ participants, including representatives from EU and national decision-making bodies, civil society, industries and academia.

  • Contributing to the adoption of the Nature Restoration Law after one of the most  tumultuous journeys in the history of EU legislation - a massive win for a broadly backed #RestoreNature civil society campaign.
Amid intensified disinformation and attacks on green NGOs, including within the European Parliament, WWF remains committed to transparency and accountability in all of our activities. NGOs like WWF play a crucial role in ensuring balanced and informed decision-making at the EU level.
