Swift adoption of updated EU water pollution standards - open letter

Companies, local authorities and environmental organisations are calling on EU institutions to conclude trilogue negotiations and protect Europe's waters.
As EU institutions continue trilogue negotiations to adopt the proposed new EU water pollution standards, drinking water and wastewater service providers, environmental civil society organisations, healthcare professionals, social partners, and local authorities have sent an open letter voicing their concerns about the little progress made in the negotiations, as well as recent proposals to weaken and delay implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD).

The update of the list of priority pollutants in surface water and groundwater is long overdue. While these lists should be updated at least every 6 years to align with new scientific evidence and ensure water security, the last updates were made in 2013 for surface water and in 2014 for groundwater
