European Parliament urges Commission to act on deforestation

Posted on 16 September 2020

The European Parliament has adopted a report in a 543-47 vote calling on the European Commission to take action on deforestation worldwide. The report, drawn-up by MEP Stanislav Polčák, calls for a new law to ensure products sold in Europe are free from deforestation, as well as requirements on the financial sector to check their impact on the world’s forests.

Anke Schulmeister-Oldenhove, Senior Forest Policy Officer at WWF EU, said: “The adoption of MEP Stanislav Polčák’s report shows strong political support for new legislation to ensure that our products are free from deforestation and human rights violations. Policy is starting to take the destruction of our planet seriously. We now need to ensure that this law covers all the world’s vital ecosystems including grasslands, wetlands, peatlands and forests.”

The European Commission has opened a public consultation on tackling the EU’s deforestation footprint. WWF, alongside 100+ NGOs, has launched the #Together4Forests campaign urging the EU to agree a strong, new law that ensures that products available in the EU are free-from deforestation, ecosystem destruction and human rights violations.
