Nature Restoration Law: All eyes on the plenary vote
Posted on June, 26 2023
While MEPs will continue to vote through over 2,300 amendments, the fate of the Nature Restoration Law will be decided on 12 July at the plenary vote.
Tomorrow, the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) Committee of the European Parliament will resume voting on the remaining amendments and the final report on the Nature Restoration Law. The committee will either agree on an amended version of the Nature Restoration Law to make its way through to the final plenary vote on 12 July or reject the Committee report, with an option to table amendments in the plenary. During the nail-biting vote on 15 June, the ENVI Committee had already rejected the attempt by conservative and right-wing groups to kill the proposed law. However, many compromise amendments were also rejected in very tight votes, often splitting the ENVI Committee exactly in half (44-44). This partly led to inconsistencies in the text which MEPs can resolve during the plenary vote by retabling amendments.
Meanwhile, numerous stakeholders have publicly come out in favour of the law [1] countering the unprecedented disinformation campaign led by Weber’s European People’s Party (EPP). Last week, a majority of Member States came out in favour of the law during the ENVI Council by adopting the Council’s negotiating position, sending a powerful message to the blocking political groups in the Parliament.
