Hoesktra’s lack of expertise in climate policy raises questions about whether he is the right candidate to lead on the climate portfolio
The Green10, a group of leading environmental NGOs of which WWF is a member, has issued a letter expressing its concern about the nomination of Wopke Hoekstra as Climate Commissioner, following the resignation of Frans Timmermans.

“We count on you to take personal responsibility for ensuring that the commissioner designate fully fulfils the responsibilities of Climate Commissioner in these times of growing climate catastrophe and uses his considerable skills to truly advance the agenda,” the Green10 tells von der Leyen in the letter.

This summer, the European continent has once again experienced devastating environmental events, including heatwaves, forest fires, flooding, and droughts. These events serve as a strong reminder of the urgent need to step up efforts to combat climate change and the breakdown of ecosystems.
