European Pact for the Future: A green and social deal for a one-planet economy
Posted on June, 03 2024
In anticipation of the upcoming European elections and a new legislative term, WWF endorses the 'European Pact for the Future: a Green and Social Deal for a One-Planet Economy.' This pact articulates an ambitious agenda, urging all governments of EU member states, as well as the next European Commission and Parliament, to prioritise a green and just transition towards climate neutrality, zero pollution and thriving nature in the next political cycle.
WWF supports the following twelve calls to action outlined in the European Pact:
- Guide the next 5-year legislative cycle with the European Pact for the Future—a green and social deal for a one-planet economy.
- Address the linked triple planetary crises of climate, biodiversity, and pollution comprehensively.
- Reduce resource use and transition towards a Circular Economy; shift also to a wellbeing economy.
- Enhance resilience and competitiveness in sectors crucial for sustainability.
- Drive systemic change through investments, fair taxation, and equitable distribution.
- Simplify the adoption of safe and sustainable choices for both individuals and businesses.
- Develop a new social contract that ensures no one is left behind.
- Enhance environmental democracy and give a voice to youth and marginalised groups.
- Strengthen solidarity across an enlarging European Union.
- Commit to global justice and foster partnerships to address common challenges.
- Implement and enforce EU legislation to protect the rule of law and public health.
- Reinforce EU governance and foster trust in the European Project.
However, WWF currently does not have a position on issues of wealth taxation and minimum income, and therefore refrains from commenting on these matters.
