Support for EU regions must exclude coal, oil and gas
The EU is hammering out Europe’s finances for 2020 and beyond. To tackle the climate crisis, the final agreement ensure a fossil fuel phase-out and guarantee the public has a say in how climate money is spent.

Ahead of the discussions, NGOs have written to the EU institutions asking them to align EU funding with a climate neutral Europe.

They specifically call for
the Council, Parliament and Commission to:
  1. Support the full exclusion of fossil fuel investments from EU financing
  2. Bring together all the relevant partners in all programming, implementation and monitoring of EU Cohesion policy (which goes to less well-off EU regions)
  3. Ensure that all EU funding programmes and projects are embedded in strategies that support climate objectives
